Copper-Catalyzed Conjugate Addition of Trimethylaluminium to α, β-Unsaturated Aldehydes

Abstract
The conjugate methylation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes by reaction with trimethylaluminium occurs smoothly in a very simple procedure under catalysis by CuBr. Scope and limitations were worked out along with studies in regard to the optimal solvent and the effect of chlorotrimethylsilane as an additive. An attack on the carbonyl group in 1,2-fashion was observed as a side reaction under the given conditions.
