ACETYLCHOLINE-EQUIVALENT CONTENT OF THE NASAL MUCOSA IN RABBITS AND CATS, BEFORE AND AFTER ADMINISTRATION OF ESTROGEN

Abstract
[longdash]Ovariectomized rabbits and cats were used. Extracts of nasal mucosa in 9 of 22 rabbits and 8 of 10 cats yielded no acetylcholine-like substance, on extraction and testing (Chang-Gaddum technic). The rest yielded an avg. of 0.02-0.03 [gamma] per g. of tissue. Tissues taken 1 hr. after inj. of estrogen showed an increase in cholinergic activity: 18 out of 24 rabbits and 10 of 11 cats gave active extracts, with an avg. conc. of over 0.09 [gamma] per g. of tissue.
