BIOSYNTHESIS OF TETRACYCLINES

Abstract
Media containing sucrose or starch, L-histidine, L-methionine, glyceryl trioleate or lard oil, and inorganic salts allowed strain BC-41 to germinate from spores, form mycelium, and accumulate up to 2 g of 7-chlorotetracycline (CTC) per L. When a washed vegetative cell inoculum previously grown on a corn steep liquor medium was used, up to 4 g of CTC per L was produced. In addition, strain BC-41 can germinate from spores, form mycelium, and synthesize CTC on a medium containing glycerol as the sole C source and NH4+ as the sole N source, although, under these conditions, CTC production is reduced.
