Function of the N cistron of bacteriophage lambda.

Abstract
Evidence derived from a study of the ability of various early mutants of [lambda] to synthesize exonuclease and endolysin indicates that the assignment of cistron N as the structural gene for the nuclease may be invalid. The available data are compatible with the hypothesis that the N cistron product is required for the initiation of transcription of that portion of the [lambda] genome concerned with early functions.
