Abstract
Injuries of the urinary tract range from contusions, some of which are of little significance, to rupture with urinary extravasation, which is an important emergency requiring prompt, efficient treatment. Management consists in careful evaluation of the patient's general physical status, institution of stabilizing measures as individually indicated, and performance of specific diagnostic studies to establish whether the urinary tract has been injured, and, if so, the location and possible extent of the injury. Of the five illustrative cases cited, two involved motor vehicles, one was an equestrian mishap, one was discovered after abdominal hysterectomy, and one involved a birth injury. Treatment of the various types of injury is described.
