Parathyroid Hormone-like Calcium Mobilizing Activity in Dog Kidney

Abstract
Dog kidneys were defatted and extracted with 90% phenol, followed by purification with Amberlite XE-64. Extracts were assayed for parathyroid hormone-like activity by the method of Munson. Recovery of the added parathyroid extract by the extracting procedure was complete. Parathyroid hormone-like activity corresponding to 18-40 USP U was found for each normal kidney, whereas such activity was undetectable in kidneys obtained from parathyroidectomized dogs. In dogs in which the proximal tubules were damaged through subcutaneous injection of sodium tartrate, parathyroid hormone-like activity was found to be similar to that of controls. These results might suggest the storage of parathyroid hormone-like substance in dog kidney.
