Effective leadership in colleges of educa tion is based on the recognition that or ganizations are cultural settings in which symbolic systems influence perception, attitudes, and behavior. The role of a Dean requires ethnographic skills in monitoring organizational realities such as changing symbolic systems, manag ing cultural conflicts, and dealing with conflicting expectations generated by organizational and professional affilia tion.
