Abstract
Effective leadership in colleges of educa tion is based on the recognition that or ganizations are cultural settings in which symbolic systems influence perception, attitudes, and behavior. The role of a Dean requires ethnographic skills in monitoring organizational realities such as changing symbolic systems, manag ing cultural conflicts, and dealing with conflicting expectations generated by organizational and professional affilia tion.Keywords
