Formation of 3-hydroxybutan-2-one and butane-2:3-diol by pig-heart preparations and its relationship to oxidation of pyruvate

Abstract
Pyruvate and mixtures of pyruvate and acetaldehyde will both act as substrates for formation of 3-hydroxybutan-2-one by the use of a pig-heart preparation capable of formation of citrate. The formation of a-acetyl-lactic acid by the system has been indicated in the presence of a large excess of pyruvic acid relative to acetaldehyde. Manganese (Mn++) ions stimulate the production of 3-hydroxybutan-4-one from acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde and thioctic acid compete for the products of decarboxylation of pyruvic acid by this system.
