The validity of clinical (biochemical) diagnostic tests was discussed in relation to sensitivity (the percent of positive results in patients with the disease); specificity (the percent of negative results among people without disease); and the predictive value which varies with sensitivity and specificity. A better understanding of the limits and uses of diagnostic laboratory services was urged. '' C.L.
