Abstract
Aneuploidy in the Cyperaceae seems to be due to hybridism, as species of Eleocharis with haploid chromosome numbers 5, 8, 8-9, 15, 18, 19, 26-29, and of Cyperus with 17, 21, 48, 54, 73 show conditions similar to those found in known hybrids. The cytological evidence is correlated with taxonomic variability and polymorphy. Dulichium arundinaceum has 15 chromosomes and Eriophorum virginicum 29.
