Effect of Propylthiouracil on Adrenal-Regeneration Hypertension in the Rat

Abstract

The treatment of rats having adrenal-regeneration hypertension with propylthiouracil, 40 mg/kg orally for 5 weeks, resulted in decreased body and tissue weights and marked lowering of hypertensive blood pressures. This treatment also caused reduction in width of the fasciculata zone of regenerated adrenal glands and thyroidectomy changes in the pituitary. An increase in the number of basophils and vacuole formation in a number of these cells was observed in control rats with adrenal-regeneration hypertension.
