The interaction of colour centres and dislocations

Abstract
This paper reviews the extensive work on the interaction between colour centres and related defects with dislocations and dislocation debris introduced by plastic deformation. The various aspects treated include: (a) the enhanced radiation colourability by prior deformation; (b) radiation hardening and photomechanical effects; (c) the effects of plastic deformation on radiation induced defects. The primary methods for probing the defect structures and their distribution are optical measurements. Measurements of flow stress, internal friction and photomechanical behaviour are used to highlight dislocation behaviour. The structures of extended radiation induced defects as revealed by microscopic examination are also discussed.
