Abstract
Excitation cross sections for the interaction of Na, K and Rb with Hg have been measured by the observation of the light emitted from a scattering chamber. The spectra of this light are given for various collision energies. In these measurements the excitation of the resonance doublet of the alkali atoms is found to be dominant. For these states the energy dependence and the absolute value of the cross sections are reported. By a polarisation analysis the cross sections for the magnetic substate of the P3/2 component are determined.
