Amalgamation in the Ag3Sn−Hg system. I. I n s i t u observations

Abstract

In situ observations of the amalgamation of Ag₃Sn are presented. It is shown that the product γ₁(Ag₂Hg₃) and γ₂(Sn₇₋₈Hg) phases nucleate homogeneously and heterogeneously, respectively, from a liquid Ag−Sn−Hg solution. The growth of the γ₁ phase is shown to be proportional to t^1/3 while that for the γ₂ phase is proportional to t^1/2.
