THE CONSTITUENTS OF THE WAX OF AMERICAN (MISSISSIPPI DELTA) COTTON

Abstract
The constituents of the extract obtained from American Upland cotton by large scale extraction with commercial “90% benzole” have been examined previously1. The method then used for extracting the cotton was open to three objections—(1) the heating was by the introduction of superheated steam, possibly causing therefore (2) concurrent saponification of esters present, and (3) the benzene was impure. The examination has therefore been repeated on the extract obtained by means of chloroform from an American Mississippi Delta cotton. The results confirm those obtained before, and show that the only noteworthy source of error then encountered was due to the presence of impurities from the benzene in the hydrocarbon fraction.
