An epidemiological study with X-ray, lung function, urine and blood tests was undertaken to ascertain the incidence of ‘green symptoms’ among 290 tobacco workers handling cured or uncured tobacco leaves. The frequency of symptoms was found to be very high (86–20 per cent). The urinary excretion rate of nicotine and its major metabolite, cotinine, was significantly increased in most of the cases.
