Abstract
HEALTH CARE quality is a topic of current concern. Quality has been the focus of recent articles in the medical literature1,2 and is being addressed by a presidential commission. These current concerns about quality are partially motivated by speculations about the effect of managed health care on quality and access, and may be related to a realization that quality cannot be assumed but rather must be understood and engineered. Keywords
