Two processes in perceptual learning.

Abstract
Report of a visual perceptual learning experiment utilizing distorted rooms of the type designed by Adelbert Ames. Transfer from one room to another of a newly learned percept occurred in eleven out of twelve cases. This is interpreted as supporting the hypothesis that two distinguishable perceptual learning processes (named reorgan-izational and formative) are involved. Positive results from six subjects who observed passively were contrary to hypothesis, and a modified formulation of the role of action in perceptual learning is outlined. It is pointed out that distorted rooms of the kind used provide a means for investigating many aspects of learning in visual space perception.
