Adverse Effects of Prophylactic Irradiation and Acute Tubular Necrosis on Renal Graft Function and Survival

Abstract
We evaluated the effects of ischemic renal failure (ATN) due to preservation and of prophylactic irradiation on renal transplant graft survival. Both ATN and prophylactic irradiation decreased actuarial graft survival; the effects were additive. These effects were independent of blood transfusion, HLA compatibility, or presensitization. The adverse effects of ATN and prophylactic irradiation correlated with lower reversibility of first and second rejection episodes.
