Cirrhosis of the liver: A study of thirty cases in adult Africans

Abstract
1. 1) Thirty African adults with clinical cirrhosis of the liver were studied. 2. 2) Biopsy material of the liver was studied in 27 of these. In none were schistosomal lesions demonstrated, although the infection is endemic in Central Africa. 3. 3) Histological examination of the material showed no significant difference in the frequency of portal (Laennec's) cirrhosis and that of post-necrotic nodular scarring. 4. 4) Siderosis is of doubtful importance as a cause of cirrhosis. 5. 5) Excessive alcoholic consumption may be a more important factor in the production of cirrhosis than has hitherto been realized.
