Effect of ferulic acid on growth and hydrolytic enzyme activities of germinating maize seeds

Abstract
Ferulic acid was tested for its effect on the growth of root and shoot, fresh and dry weights, and hydrolytic enzyme activities of germinating maize seeds. The results showed that root growth was inhibited more than shoot growth. A significant reduction in the activities of hydrolytic enzymes was also observed, which reflects a mechanism of action for the natural growth inhibitors, which may include other phenolic compounds.
