An Apparatus for the Simultaneous Determination of Absorption Isotherms and Magnetic Susceptibility

Abstract
An apparatus is described for the simultaneous determination of adsorption isotherms and magnetic susceptibility. A fused silica spring with a sensitivity of 3 mm/mg is used to determine adsorption gravimetrically in the manner of McBain and Bakr. An electromagnet is incorporated in the apparatus to allow the determination of the magnetic susceptibility of the sample and the adsorbed vapor by the Faraday method. The apparent change in weight caused by the inhomogeneous magnetic field is 11.46×103 times the sample weight for a substance of unit magnetic susceptibility (cgs units). The same spring is used for the measurement of adsorption and magnetic susceptibility, and both measurements are made on the same sample.
