Abstract
EXERCISE participation is a powerful motivator towards achieving generally healthier life-styles among the general public. Fitness-testing, together with appropriate advice to individuals on how to take safe levels of exercise, can act as the trigger for positive personal action. This paper reviews the de velopment of criteria and techniques for measuring fitness and argues that, if it is correctly applied, fit ness-testing has an invaluable and integral part to play in public health and fitness promotion. Keywords
