Abstract
Britain is regarded as a multiethnic and multicultural society with about 3 million people (6% of the population) belonging to black and other minority ethnic groups (Le Var, 1998). These figures are based on the 1991 census; however, new figures are imminent following the results of the 2001 population census. It is clear that within this society, healthcare providers need to not only respond to the cultural and ethnic diversity but also deliver a culturally appropriate and sensitive service based on fairness and justice.
