CHANGES IN THE GENITAL TRACTS OF GUINEA PIGS ASSOCIATED WITH CYSTIC AND ‘INTERSTITIAL GLAND’ OVARIES OF LONG DURATION1

Abstract

After irradiation of the ovaries of guinea pigs, the normal ovarian stroma was replaced by interstitial gland cells formed from follicles of all sizes, resembling young luteal cells and remaining in their original condition for an indefinite time. These apparently secreted theelin. There occurred irregular estrous cycles with prolonged estrous. Within a year after irradiation small endometrial cysts were common. These became larger, more numerous, more irregularly distributed. Uterine musculature and tunica propria were replaced by varying amts. of fibrous tissue. Epithelial downgrowths occurred in the vaginae, more severe with increased age. Secondary pathologic conditions resulted from adhesions to other organs.
