Presented word or picture triads to 104 undergraduates for 13 trials in L. R. Peterson and M. J. Peterson's (see record) paradigm, with a different triad on each trial. Control Ss saw 1 stimulus type throughout; for experimental Ss the stimulus type changed after every 4 trials. Release from proactive inhibition occurred, but declined across successive shifts. In final free recall, experimental Ss accurately remembered stimulus presentation type.
