Menarcheal age in Cumbria

Abstract

A survey of age at menarche in north-west England, how it is affected by family environment and how it affects physique, was carried out on a large sample of schoolgirls in Cumbria. Age at menarche shows no independent effect of social class, but is strongly influenced by family size and also partly by position in family. Similar results emerge from analyses of the status quo and recall data. Menarcheal status differences remain associated with pronounced differences in height and weight when all other variables are held constant, and there is a slight suggestion that the effect diminishes the later the age at which menarche occurs. Ein Überblick darüber, wie das Menarchealter in Nordwest-England von der Familienumgebung beeinflußt wird und wie es die Konstitution beeinflußt, wurde bei einer großen Stichprobe von Schulmädchen in Cumbria durchgeführt. Das Menarchealter zeigt keinen unabhängigen Effekt der Sozialklasse, es wird aber stark beeinflußt durch die Familiengröße und teilweise auch durch die Position in der Familie. Ähnliche Befunde ergeben sich aus Analysen von status quo- und Erinnerungs-Daten. Menarchestatusunterschiede bleiben verknüpft mit deutlichen Unterschieden in Höhe und Gewicht, wenn alle anderen Variablen konstant gehalten werden, und es gibt einen leichten Hinweis darauf, daß diese Wirkung nachläßt, je später das Menarchealter. Les différences de statut quant à la ménarche restent associés à des différences prononcées de taille et de poids quand toutes les autres variables sont tenues constantes, et il y a une légère suggestion que cet effet diminue à áge croissant auquel la ménarche survient.
