Arcs with Small Cathode Current Density

Abstract

Arcs with cathode current densities of less than one hundred amperes per ${\mathrm{cm}}^2$, have been found to exist at gas pressures of from 10 to 50 mm. The theory that electrons are drawn from the cathode by intense electric fields maintained by space charges cannot apply to these arcs.
