Schistosomiasis and Cancer in Iraq

Abstract

Ten % of 174 autopsied cases of carcinoma from Baghdad, Iraq, also were infected with Schistosoma hematobium. The 2 conditions were found together most frequently with carcinomas of urinary bladder, rectum and prostate. In these locations schistosomiasis is of carcinogenic importance, although only a small number of parasitized persons develop carcinomas.
