Abstract
The preparation of trimetholylacetic acid from trichlorpentaerythritol is described. The 4th hydroxyl group of the latter was oxidized carefully with nitric acid to yield tris- chlormethyl - acetic acid, and the latter hydrolyzed with barium hydroxide to trimethyoly acetic acid. The product gave one spot on paper chromatography.
