Pteridines in blue green algae

Abstract
A variety of species of blue green algae yield different but closely related compounds when treated by a standard technique. These are glycosides of biopterin (2-amino-4-hydroxy-6-dihydroxypropylperidine), different sugars being attached to the side chain to give different compounds. The glucoside of 2-amino-4-hydroxy-6-hydroxymethylpteridine has been isolated from 1 species. The possibile significance of these compounds in relation to folic acid metabolism is discussed.
