The f.c.c. to b.c.c. transformation in Fe film on a spherical Cu substrate

Abstract
The orientation of an Fe layer formed on a nearly spherical Cu surface of a field-ion microscopy (FIM) specimen has been examined by considering the Bain distortion of an initially f.c.c. Fe layer into a b.c.c. layer. It was found that, on the spherical substrate surface, within about 35[ddot] from the [111] axis, the Fe layer was divided into six domains depending on the compression axis of the Bain distortion. The domain boundaries were on the 〈110〉 zones of the substrate and each domain consisted of two Kurdjumov-Sachs variants. This was attributed to the predominant formation of the Kurdjimov-Sachs variants on the 〈110〉 zones.
