New Eascs for Recreation Planning

Abstract
Planners and recreation specialists have for the past two decades relied primarily on standards which stress the relationship of the size of area served with the number of persons residing therein. This concept is no longer functional: increased mobility, leisure, and family income are bringing about rapid changes in our recreation patterns. A study of the social variables which condition recreation pursuits is basic for the sound planning of recreation areas. Co-operation between the planner and recreation specialist, rather than standards for recreation facilities, must be sought and developed. Regional, configuration, and multiple-use planning are valuable planning concepts and should be applied to recreation as well as to other activities which affect land use.
