High-resolution real-time sonography of the thyroid.

Abstract
A high-resolution real-time ultrasound scanner was used to examine the thyroid gland in over 550 patients; surgical and pathologic proof were obtained in 133 patients. Ultrasound findings were demonstrated in patients with follicular adenomas, multinodular goiter, Hashimoto thyroiditis, hemorrhagic cysts, 1 simple cyst, and malignant tumors of the gland. Primary uses of ultrasound study of the thyroid include the detection of a multinodular gland when only 1 nodule is suspected and the detection of occult carcinoma.
