Abstract
Alden J. D. (1977) Economic problems facing urban areas in South Wales, Reg. Studies 11, 285–296. The article examines the current economic vitality of urban areas in South Wales. From an analysis of economic indicators, focused particularly on employment, spatial differentials in economic performance are identified. An assessment is made of the extent to which government policies reflect the differentials that exist. The role of manufacturing industry in meeting the job needs of urban areas in South Wales is critically examined, and consideration also made of the increased competition for jobs between areas. The article concludes with an appraisal of government policy on job creation towards the assisted areas of South Wales.
