Abstract
In the presence of a patent foramen ovale, pulmonary embolism may result in a right-to-left interatrial shunt which serves to alleviate the effects of the embolism. When the shunt is occluded by a subsequent embolus, sudden death occurs. The clinical and pathologic features of the syndrome are described. Keywords
