The factors causing alcoholic liver disease or cirrhosis are discussed. Morphologic studies support the toxic theories of alcohol, but do not define the role of nutritional imbalance in cirrhosis. Ultra-structural examination must be quantitated and combined with biochemical assay of proteins, enzymes and cofactors in order to define the exact effect of alcohol on the liver.
