Occupational Leukoderma

Abstract
The authors studied an outbreak of leukoderma among the workers in a tannery wearing heavy acid-cured rubber gloves. Patch testing with the various chemicals in the gloves showed that the antioxidant, menobenzyl ether of hydroquinone was the cause of the leukoderma. In some instances allergic reactions were experimentally produced on normal skin by long continued application of this compound. Repigmentation of the leukodermic areas was noted following the withdrawal of the antioxidant from the rubber gloves. The authors suggest the possible use of antioxidants for the depigmentation of hyperpigmented areas of the skin.
