A Consensus-Development Conference was held at the National Institutes of Health on December 3–5, 1980, to consider the status of coronary-artery bypass surgery in relation to five specific questions: (1) What is the overall management of coronary-artery disease — that is, in what context should coronary-artery surgery be considered? (2) What constitutes a reasonable diagnostic workup before recommending medical or surgical therapy?
