THE TIME NECESSARY FOR REBREATHING IN A LUNG-BAG SYSTEM TO ATTAIN HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE

Abstract

A study was made of the time necessary for attaining equilibrium between the pulmonary gases and a H-air mixture rebreathed from a rubber bag. For the average normal subject in the sitting position, a period of 15 sec., during which about 5 deep resplrations are made, is necessary when 2.4 liters are put in the bag and the subject explres to his residual air before the beginning of the experiment. The effect of varying the rate of resplration and the volume of gas in the bag were also determined.
