Abstract
Platelet microembolism has been studied in experimental shock. Cinephotomicrographs have been obtained which demonstrate the emboli as they lodge in the lung blocking the circulation. There is a simultaneous elevation of venous pressure and drop of arterial pressure, as well as a drop in the systemic platelet count. It is felt that micropulmonary embolism may be a factor in the right heart failure and systemic hypotension often described in irreversible shock.
