Evidence of Direct Amebacidal Action of Agents Tested In vitro against Endamoeba histolytica

Abstract
In vitro studies have been complicated by possible indirect action of the agents by inhibiting the associated organisms. "Direct" amebicidal action can be determined in cultures growing in association with Trypanosoma cruzi which is highly resistant to chemotherapeutic drugs employed against amebiasis. Concns. of the conventional amebicides and antibiotics found to be amebicidal were tested on the rate of O2 consumption of the trypanosomes alone, and found to have no effect.
