Abstract
Optical pumping in the ground state of is studied in detail. Pumping and nutation transient signals are used to investigate relaxation phenomena and to place upper limits on buffer-gas disorientation cross sections. has been optically pumped in the same cell yielding and . The large (2%) difference between the accepted NMR value and the previously reported optical-pumping value is thus confirmed.
