Abstract
Using a photo-electric cell graphical records were obtained of the intensity and duration of the light emitted by Photuris pennsylvandca at various oxygen tensions.[long dash]The experiments indicate that the mechanism of flashing is responsive to nervous and to direct electrical stimulation, that it effects control by regulating admission of O to the cells containing the photogenic substances, and that variation in character of flash is brought about by variation either of number of units stimulated or of amount of stimulation and response (admission of O to cells) in the unit involved. The tracheal end cell, long considered by histological investigators as responsible for control of luminescence, is certainly the responsive mechanism in this control.
