SOME OBSERVATIONS OF THE REACTION OF SCHIFF REAGENT WITH ALDEHYDES

Abstract
From the reaction mixture of Schiff reagent and formaldehyde 3 to 6 (sometimes even 7) compounds can be separated on paper chromatogram. The Rf values of these compounds range from .09 to .74 and the absorption maxima from 535 to 574 mµ. The formation of these compounds is influenced by at least two factors: the SO2-content of the Schiff reagent and the molar ratio of aldehyde to Schiff reagent. Saturation of the Schiff reagent with SO2 influences the hue of Feulgen stained nuclei and reduces the variation in Feulgen microspectrophotometry.
