Abstract
In previous developments of the theory of rotational excitation in collisions of diatomic molecules, the cross sections have been expressed in terms of a generalized phase shift. In the present paper, the equations which determine the successive terms in a semiclassical expansion of the generalized phase shift are discussed and the first two equations are developed explicitly. Keywords
