The paper outlines the uses made of surface coatings and the range of processes available for producing deposits. Thermal spraying is compared with other major surfacing processes (welding, electroplating and vapour deposition and the advantages and limitations are indicated. Specific examples indicate where thermal spraying may be used to advantage.
