Abstract
Structural models of the two- and three-dimensional icosahedral quasicrystals have been derived from the structure, especially the MgCu2 unit, of the pentagonal Frank-Kasper phases. In the two-dimensional case, icosahedra are somewhat distorted and placed in juxtaposition, as in the Frank-Kasper phases, on the lattice points of the Penrose lattice drawn by Mackay. In the three-dimensional case, additional atoms have been inserted in the two rhombohedral units of the triacontahedron with reference to the structure of MgCu2.
