AMPHETAMINE-RESIN COMPLEX FOR PROLONGED APPETITE SUPPRESSION

Abstract
The combination of an amphetamine compound with an ion exchange resin was shown to dissociate slowly at a uniform and predictable rate in vitro and also following ingestion by animals. A similar dissociation was obtained clinically after a single application as indicated by the prolonged suppression of appetite for 10 to 12 hours in about 90% of 104 patients. The effectiveness of this appetite suppression was markedly superior to an even greater amount of amphetamine given in tablet form 3 times daily. Furthermore, a single capsule of the amphetamine-resin complex induced an appreciably greater loss in weight than that following tablet therapy. The incidence of side reactions following administration of the resin complex was somewhat less than with the tablets. The amphetamine-resin complex offers a number of advantages over tablet preparations in the treatment of obesity because of its convenience and its predictable prolonged effect.
