Molecular Arrangement of Nematic Liquid Crystals

Abstract
The molecular arrangement of twelve types of nematic liquid crystals is observed on the surfaces of the supporting plates of soda-, pyrex-, or quartz-glass. These surfaces are treated with various methods. The impurity APAP or EBPAP added to the nematic liquid crystals promotes the molecular alignment perpendicular to the glass plate. A mechanism of the molecular alignment of nematic liquid crystals on the glass surface is discussed in connection with the molecular structures of nematic liquid crystals based on the experimental results.
